PROJECT SUMMARY

Tastify is an award-winning coffee cupping app to provides a service that enables anyone to easily schedule and track their coffee cupping schedule. I was the main designer in leading this project to revamp the table to be more organized. I worked with 1 designer, 2 engineers, and 1 PM. Table is one of the most important part of the Tastify website since it is targeting to satisfy the users (= the coffee cuppers)’ experience in organizing their coffee cupping sessions and scheduling. I have to ensure that the table design can provide a smooth experience for the users with clean, functional, and enhanced design.

When the users make a coffee cupping schedule, the data is sent and organized in the table. They can see the basic information that they have inputted, such as cupping ID, owner (name), time, description, location, samples information, status, and also to make some actions, such as edit, archive, remove, and review their data.

However, the previous design fails to provide the users with how to find, scan, and track their data easily and quickly. Other than that, the overall design also makes them feel confused in what information they can obtain. This results in frustrations for the users every time they want to look for their cupping sessions.

BUSINESS PROBLEM

The main problem for the business is that with the unclear system of the cupping session table, which is the main feature of the app,

The users may leave Tastify app and find another app that can solve their problem faster and easier.

In this case, it means that this problem is crucial where the company can lose customers, which will impact the company’s revenue.

BEFORE

AFTER

From the feedbacks we gathered,

We found that with the current design experience, users feel quite stressful to find a particular cupping session data that they want to make actions on.

For most users, they have to do a lot of scrolling to find one desired session out of many, which increases their COGNITIVE LOAD. It takes up a significant amount of time and reduce effectiveness.

THE PROBLEM STATEMENT

BREAKDOWN OF CURRENT EXPERIENCE

GOAL + HMW STATEMENT

After doing some usability testings with existing customers and heuristic evaluation with the team members, we found that the users seem to want to have a clean table with some flexibilities to control the data table by themselves so that they can find the data that they want. Then, we further narrow down the problem scope:

How might we build a clean and organized coffee cupping sessions data table that can give the users a control to find and edit their desired data?

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

MAJOR DESIGN CHANGES

NEW DESIGN

I would like to thank Tastify UX Design Team to give me the opportunity throughout the summer to learn about UI/UX Design as an Intern. Everyone in the team has helped me a lot to deliver something meaningful to Tastify’s users. Here are some things that I have achieved and learned from this internship:

  • I learned how to receive design suggestions and needs from the Stakeholders. I think that this was an important experience since I needed to put myself in their shoes and empathize with them, just as what I do with the users. I could find out the pain points, values, and expectations for every project.

  • I learned how to talk with the Engineers and PM in having a discussion about design changes and progress. It was quite challenging sometimes when there are some differences between me, the designer, and the Engineers. However, I continued to cope up with the challenges and learned from every discussion session that I had.

  • I was taught how UX is very important in every piece of design, not just the visual, but the usability is very important. In this project, I was asked to re-construct a data table so that it can improve the usability. I first thought that data table was a very simple thing that we did not need to pay attention to, but I learned in this project how there are many aspects of data table that can affect the experience of the users in navigating this site. Furthermore, data table is important in Tastify’s site since it is where most of the users navigate to. Not everything is just about the visual pleasure.
